Week 6 - Mystery Macro #2
Week 6 in April. Guess I'm a bit more than a bit behind. But here it is, as requested. Mystery macro #2. Taken by looking through the viewfinder from about a foot back, so the focus was a complete guess. Oh, and the last mystery macro was cat fur.
I did a few of these mystery photos when I first started my Photo A Day project in 2006. I got wrapped up in shooting this particular subject the other day but haven't taken many other photos. So, here you have it. Mystery photo #1 for 2009.
Yep. Behind already on week 4! Writing report cards and doing grades has taken up so much time over the last few weeks, so this is a shot taken a few weeks ago that I had finally processed but forgot to post. I'll try to get something new up for week 5!

Week 3 - Chai

It's report card writing time, so I'm spending the weekend doing grades and writing narratives. Not my favorite part of the school year by any means, but a warm cup of chai helps to make it a little more bearable. The background is a placemat with some snowflakes on it that I propped up. Lighting is from the window on the right with a reflector to the left. Yeah, I spent too much time on this... just proof that I'm much better at procrastinating than photography!

Week 2 - Needles

I got myself a pair of snowshoes the other week, so of course I had to go use them today after the snowfall overnight. I didn't find much to shoot along the way, but I did like the way the sun was streaming through some of the snow covered pines. Unfortunately, this little branch was a bit out of my reach with the reversed 50mm lens, so I just held the camera up to the branch, took 3 shots and hoped for the best. I'm so glad I don't shoot with film. I'd go broke developing all my rotten shots.

Anyway, I'm not sure where the vivid blue background came from, I suppose up into the other snow covered pines, but I didn't adjust the color of the shot, just some levels, cropping, dodging and burning. All in all, not a great day for photos, but it was a nice hike.

Week 1 - Layers

Was out hiking a new trail came along this tree, which held the trail marker. I liked the variety of textures in the different layers. So, this becomes #1 for the 2009 Photo a Week project.

Massive ice Thursday night, followed by a coating of snow on Friday. Two days later, the trees are still encrusted in ice, power is still out for many, and clean up crews are working overtime. I headed to Thacher Park for a hike, and I was the only one crazy enough to be out apparently. After a short but breathtaking hike, 300+ pictures (maybe something for the Bokeh challenge at DPC), and watching a tree fall over from the weight of the ice on its branches, I was happy to get back to the car where my thermos of hot chocolate was waiting for me!

I love this shot because of the way the trees take on the appearance of glass. Unfortunately, the lens I was using causes terrible color fringing around the edges of bright areas, so the original of this shot was all purple and green.
Also taken back in October. There were all of these great little streams and puddles on the sides of the trail being hit by the sunlight just right to make neat reflections.
I know, I know... I need to put up some new pictures. This was taken in October at Thacher Park. The sunlight was streaming through the trees just right to backlight these ferns.
